Here again, the localized nature of our research gives it a depth and richness that a nationwide study would not have. We have conducted interviews with state and district school officials, principals, teachers, parents, and teachers in order to interpret our statistical findings in terms of the lives and experiences of those involved in public education in Louisiana.
Bankston III is a sociologist with an interest in public education who served as a substitute teacher in New Orleans in 1993 and 1994 while doing fieldwork. Bankston has also devised and administered surveys of public school teachers during the research for this book. Stephen J. Caldas is a certified teacher in Louisiana who taught in three school districts in the state from 1981 through 1987. Caldas worked as psychometrician for the Louisiana Department of Education and had primary responsibility for developing instruments and interpreting educational statistics relating to student and school accountability.
